Why I'm the Dog For You

About the Japanese Akita Inu

I am calm, docile, intelligent, courageous and fearless. Careful, affectionate and attentive with my family.

I’m large, rugged, powerful,  majestic, quiet and dignified.

I have a double layer thick coat that comes in many colors and patterns.

I look imposing, so I make an effective deterrent.  I am a good watchdog.

I don't bark much - think of me as strong & silent.  If you hear me bark I require your attention immediately, I only bark for a purpose.

I am very loyal & protective of my pack (family).  I'm obedient (if trained correctly).

I don't need a lot of exercise - but Iove long brisk walks and an occasional vigorous run.

I love the cold & snow and can live outdoors!   But I really like to live indoors with my people.  I can tolerate apartment life (if exercised).

I am clean & very easy to housebreak.  I am an angel in the house; however I tend to make a mess when drinking!

I am not the needy, clingy type ...  I am noble and kind, and make an excellent companion.

Why I'm may  NOT be the Dog for You

Golden Havoc Japanese Akitas Inu

The Akita Inu is majestic, handsome, calm, dignified,  and SUPER clean.  They are very easy to housebreak.  They are quiet and seldom bark.    They make an awesome pet.

There are two types of Akitas, the original Japanese Akita breed (Akita Inu) and now a separate designation for American standard Akitas.   The weights and sizes are different and the American standard allows a black mask, whereas the original Japanese breed standard does not allow for a black mask.   According to the FCI, in Japan and in many other countries around the world the American Akita is considered a separate breed from the Akita Inu (Japanese Akita).

The Japanese Akita has a smaller triangular head that resembles the head of a huge fox. It also has almond eyes and ears that are set lower and carried forward. On the other hand, the American version has a larger bone structure, larger eyes, and small eyes that resemble those of a bear.

The Japanese Akita comes in only 4 colors, pure white, red fawn, sesame (which is red fawn with black tips or markings), and brindle (a patchy coloring with a streak of brown or gray).

I’m strong willed and stubborn and want to be the boss.

I need an experienced owner diligent in training me to be subordinate to everyone in your household. You cannot allow me to to exert dominance and be the leader -- if allowed -- I will become uncontrollable.

I can be very territorial and instinctual. The Akita is a breed of dog that has a high chase or hunt instinct. We were bred in Japan to hunt!

As mentioned I need firm training and a firm, confident, consistent  pack leader. Without it, I become very willful and may become very aggressive to other dogs and animals.

I should become acquainted with cats and other household pets early in life to avoid aggressive behavior.    I like other pets -- but like to an only pet also.

I get along with children great, especially older children.  But I don't like to be teased!
